Enter a VIN (or year/make/model) and get every open NHTSA safety recall on that vehicle: the defect, the risk, and the remedy. Recall work is always free at a dealer. If anyone quotes you for one, you now know they are padding the ticket.
Whether the manufacturer admits a safety defect exists on your vehicle and owes you a free fix. That is genuinely useful — especially before buying a used car: pair it with the free 19-point driveway checklist.
Why your car actually shudders, stalls, or throws a light. Recalls cover defects the manufacturer has admitted. Your problem may not be on the list — yet.
Still having a problem after checking? That is what a flat-rate $150 diagnostic answers — with tests, not guesses.
Book a diagnosticYes. If your vehicle is covered by an open NHTSA safety recall, any authorized dealer for your brand must perform the remedy free of charge — parts, labor, and diagnostics included. A shop that quotes you for recall work is either not doing the recall through the manufacturer or is padding the invoice. Confirm the recall campaign number (we link every one to its NHTSA report) before you hand over the car.
A recall is a federally mandated fix for a safety defect — free to everyone, forever. A TSB is a manufacturer's guidance memo to dealers about a known problem; it is often chargeable unless you push for goodwill coverage. This tool checks safety recalls only. If your symptom matches a known TSB, a proper diagnosis is what connects the two — we do that on-site for a flat fee.
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is 17 characters — letters and digits, never the letters I, O, or Q. You will find it stamped on the dashboard at the base of the windshield (readable from outside), on the driver-door jamb sticker, on your registration, and inside your insurance app. In Texas it is also etched on most vehicles' lower windshield corners.
Then you have a diagnostic problem, not a recall problem. Recall remedies fix one known defect; the same symptom can have other causes (a wiring fault, a related module, or something the recall was papering over). Glass Box Diagnostics runs a full all-module scan with live-data testing for a flat $150, mobile, across the Canyon Lake / Hill Country area — and the $95 second-opinion review applies if another shop already started guessing.
