TX inspection rejection guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
Hiccup — the old-timer word — covers the easy-to-miss items: a dead running light, a license-plate lamp (yes, really), a high-mount stop lamp, a streaking wiper blade, a silent horn, hazed headlight lenses. Most are bulb-and-socket level. The ones that aren't: a horn that's dead because the clockspring behind the steering wheel is broken (that usually comes with an airbag light), or half the rear lights out because of one corroded ground or a misbehaving trailer-wiring module. A dead bulb is a parts-store trip; a whole circuit behaving weird is a diagnostic.
The clock: These don't need a shop calendar — but they do need to be right before the re-check, and you can't fix what's still a guess. Probe the circuit once; don't re-pay the station twice.
'Come back after you fix everything' with no help finding the one weird thing — so you re-test, pay again, and fail again because the plate lamp was fine but its ground was green.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $0 in parts, but $30–$60 of repeat re-inspection fees per round when the cause stays hidden
Circuit-by-circuit check with the socket probed for power and ground — five minutes with a test light sorts 'bulb' from 'wiring' so the second trip to the station is the last trip.
