TX inspection rejection guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
The inspector walks the vehicle first: tire size mismatch and tread depth, a cut or bulging sidewall, a cracked windshield in the driver's view, missing mirrors, a ball joint or tie-rod with play, exhaust leaking forward of the converter, a fluid soak on the underside. None of it is an electrical 'diagnosis' — but several rejections hide diagnostic causes: tires worn to cords on one edge in 15,000 miles means a suspension angle problem, and a ticking exhaust with a rough idle can be the same manifold crack.
The clock: Structural under-car rejections (ball joints, tie rods, frame rot) mean the vehicle failed as UNSAFE. That's the window on the slip — and with steering play, it's also the reason not to drive far between now and then.
Sell a full tire set without asking why the old ones wore out on one shoulder — and a $1,300 steering 'rack' for a $120 tie-rod end, because nobody checked the play with the wheel loaded.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $900–$2,000 (tires + steering assembly) when one $120 linkage part caused the wear pattern
Loaded pry-bar checks per joint, a tire wear pattern read against alignment angles, and the leak traced to its actual source. The report lists each rejected line item and what makes it pass — photographically.
