Tire roar follows the road surface — it changes when you move from asphalt to concrete. Wheel-bearing hum changes when you swerve gently left and right, because load shifts the failing side on and off. Differential whine changes pitch between accelerating and coasting at the same speed. Ten minutes of driving separates them. That is why so many cars show up at tire shops with bearings wearing through their tone rings and a set of new tires on the invoice that fixed nothing.
“It's your tires — and you need an alignment.” An $800–$1,300 experiment that happens to silence some drones. On a bearing car it buys six more months of growth before the play chews the ABS tone ring and the warning light joins the noise.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $800–$1,300 (tires and alignment) over a $150–$400 wheel-bearing repair that was hiding underneath
Swerve test on a safe road to load each side, coast-down listening, then hoist: grab the wheel at 12 and 6 for play, spin it by hand for roughness, check for ABS-ring damage. A bearing loose enough to hear is loose enough to damage the tone ring — the C0035 is what that costs later.
