Symptom guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
A rough idle, vibration under load, or a jerky stumble means one or more cylinders are not burning fuel. Coil, plug, injector, compression, or timing — each has a different price and a different test. Guessing here is the most expensive game in the shop.
Plugs and coils — all of them ($500–$900). A reasonable-sounding shotgun that misses injector, fuel, and mechanical causes entirely — and cooks your catalytic converter if the real problem stays.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $500–$900 (ignition parts cannon) when fuel or timing is at fault
Per-cylinder misfire counters, swap-the-coil logic, injector balance, compression and leak-down if the pattern says mechanical. Random vs. specific-cylinder misfires are completely different diagnoses.
